Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews: How B2B Brands Get Cited in Both

Google AI Mode and AI Overviews cite the same URLs only 13.7% of the time. Dual-surface playbook for B2B brands in 2026.

Google AI Mode and AI Overviews are two citation engines, not a short and long version of the same answer. Ahrefs analyzed 540,000 query pairs and found they cite the same URLs only 13.7% of the time, even while agreeing on the answer 86% of the time. A page that wins Overviews is usually missing from AI Mode, and the reverse is just as common.

This is a sequel, not a rewrite. The Overviews playbook lives in How to Get Cited in Google AI Overviews. This post is the dual-surface version: what is different, which 2026 overlap numbers hold up, and how B2B brands get cited in both without collapsing them into one Google AI score.

The audience is already there. At Google I/O 2026, Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews now have over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion. G2's 2026 AI Search Insight Report, a March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B decision-makers, found 51% start software research with an AI chatbot more often than Google, while 80% still use Google somewhere in the journey. Buyers bounce between surfaces. Your citation program has to as well.

Drawing on 12+ years in search, Austin Heaton treats AI Mode and AI Overviews as two channels that share an entity graph. The work that produced Rise's 575% AI search expansion and iSpeedToLead's 7.79% citation share is the same loop: extractable commercial pages, off-site corroboration, and a log that does not mix the two Google surfaces.

What's the difference between Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are the AI answer box on a classic results page. Google AI Mode is a conversational Search surface that produces a longer, sourced reply and supports follow-ups. They share an index and query fan-out. They do not share a citation list. Treat them as two products.

Overviews sit on top of blue links. The job is a compact answer with a handful of citations a scanner can trust in seconds. AI Mode is the research session: longer output, more entities, more sources, and a chat that can keep going. Google's Search I/O 2026 post made the handoff explicit: you can ask a follow-up from an Overview and flow into AI Mode with context kept.

Ahrefs measured the format gap on September 2025 US Brand Radar data:

  • Length: AI Mode responses are roughly 4x longer than Overviews.
  • Entities: AI Mode mentions 3.3 people or brands on average versus 1.3 in Overviews.
  • Citations: 3% of AI Mode responses cite nothing, versus 11% of Overviews.
  • Brand presence: 59% of Overviews mention no brand or person, versus about 35% of AI Mode replies.

A B2B comparison page can win Overviews as a tight definition and still lose AI Mode, which is pulling an encyclopedic cluster and naming extra vendors. Being named in the prose without a URL is also not a citation. That gap is AI mentions vs AI citations.

Do they cite the same URLs?

No. URL overlap is 13.7%. Domain overlap among each engine's top 20 sources is higher, at 43%, which still means most leading domains are unique to one surface. Being cited in Overviews does not put you in AI Mode, and vice versa.

Ahrefs compared AI Mode and Overview responses for the same queries. Cited URLs overlapped 13.7% of the time. Restricting the test to each response's top three citations only raised overlap to 16.3%. Word-level overlap was 16%. The systems still agreed on meaning: cosine similarity averaged 86%. They say the same thing. They quote different pages.

Am I Cited used a coarser unit: the top 20 cited domains per engine from June 24 to July 23, 2026. Twelve of those 20 domains were shared, a Jaccard overlap of 43%. Overviews' unique leaders skewed institutional. AI Mode's unique leaders skewed social and community. The shared set is a Google consensus of large, well-known domains. The unique set is the opportunity.

One caveat from Ahrefs: the URL study is a single-generation snapshot, and 45% of Overview citations already change between generations. The pools could overlap more over multiple runs. The operating rule does not change. Track the two surfaces separately, then compute overlap per keyword.

Why a top-10 ranking is no longer enough for either surface

A top-10 ranking is no longer enough because both surfaces retrieve from fan-out sub-queries, not only from the original SERP. Ahrefs' March 2026 update found only 38% of AI Overview citations also rank in the top 10, down from about 76% in July 2025. The other 62% come from outside page one.

The March 2, 2026 Ahrefs study covered 863,000 keyword SERPs and 4 million Overview URLs. 37.9% of cited URLs also appeared in the first 10 result blocks. The rest split almost evenly: 31.2% from positions 11 to 100, and 31.0% from beyond the top 100. Google has confirmed query fan-out: the original question is split into related sub-searches, and pages that show up on those sub-SERPs get cited even when they do not rank for the head term.

Ranking #1 for best AP automation for mid-market finance still helps retrieval. It does not reserve a citation slot on either surface. The pages that win answer the fanned-out questions in extractable passages, which is also why citations churn on a weeks-long clock, documented in why AI citations disappear after 30 days.

How to earn AI Overview citations

Earn AI Overview citations with extraction-ready revenue pages, then add three Overview-specific bets: a core page the box can quote, a YouTube asset that names the product, and a brand in the first 40 to 60 words. Do not rebuild the full Overviews playbook here. Run that stack, then layer these.

The base layer is already public: question headings, a 40 to 60 word answer under each, schema, freshness, and bottom-funnel URLs first. That is How to Get Cited in Google AI Overviews. Three tactics that post does not own, and that Ahrefs' Mode-versus-Overviews data supports:

  1. Give Overviews a core page, not only a blog post. Ahrefs found Overviews cite videos and core pages (homepages and main category pages) nearly twice as often as AI Mode. A product, category, or use-case URL with a self-contained definition is an Overview-shaped source. A long essay is an AI Mode-shaped source. Ship both.
  2. Pair the page with a YouTube URL the Overview can cite. In the March 2026 Ahrefs update, YouTube accounted for 18.2% of Overview-cited pages that did not rank in the top 100 for the same keyword, and 5.6% of all Overview URLs in the set. A demo whose title, description, and transcript name the product and category is a retrieval path your blog cannot replace.
  3. Put the brand in the opening capsule. 59% of Overviews mention no brand. If the first 40 to 60 words define the category without naming you, the box can answer the query and skip the vendor. Name the product, the ICP, and one proof point in that capsule.

If the revenue pages are not extractable yet, fix that first. A YouTube video will not rescue a pricing page the model cannot parse.

How to earn AI Mode citations

Earn AI Mode citations by covering the fan-out, not the head term: sub-topic pages, entity corroboration, and community sources the longer answer actually quotes. AI Mode is 4x longer and names 2.5x more entities. A single compact page that won Overviews is usually too thin for this surface.

  • Map the fan-out before you write. For each commercial prompt, list the sub-questions a long answer has to cover: pricing, implementation, integrations, who it is not for, alternatives, and proof. Those sub-questions are the retrieval units. If only the parent page exists, AI Mode will cite a competitor's sub-page.
  • Ship sub-topic URLs, not one mega-guide. AI Mode cited Wikipedia in 28.9% of responses versus 18.1% for Overviews. It wants reference-shaped coverage. Comparison, alternatives, implementation, and use-case pages beat a single guide that buries every answer. That is the same asset set Deep Research opens, covered in how to get cited in ChatGPT Deep Research reports.
  • Corroborate the entity off-site. If Overviews mention you, Ahrefs found a 61% chance AI Mode includes that entity and then adds more. Consistent category language on the site, G2, LinkedIn, and Crunchbase keeps you in the expanded set. That graph is entity authority AEO, and why G2 reviews become ChatGPT citations also feed Google's longer surface.
  • Show up where community sources live. Ahrefs found Quora cited 3.5x more often in AI Mode than in Overviews, and Facebook about 2x as often. Reddit remains a shared source, which is why Reddit AI citations matter for B2B in 2026. Earn extractable, named-use-case mentions that match the on-site sentence. Do not spam threads.

AI Mode will still cite you if the Overview did, more often than the reverse, and then it will put extra competitors next to you. The job is to be the source those extra sentences rest on. Claude runs a similar corroboration test, which is why the same entity work shows up in how to get cited by Claude AI in 2026.

If AI Mode is naming two competitors you already beat in Overviews, the gap is usually a missing sub-topic page. Book a discovery call and we will mark the URLs the fan-out is already retrieving.

How B2B buyers actually use each surface

B2B buyers use Overviews for a fast read on a SERP and AI Mode for the longer evaluation, while a growing share start the whole journey in a chatbot. You need the Overview citation for the scan and the AI Mode citation for the session that builds the shortlist.

G2's March 2026 survey is the buyer-side split. 51% of B2B software buyers start research with an AI chatbot more often than Google. 41% use Deep Research regularly. 80% still use Google during the journey. The Google piece now includes a 2.5 billion-user Overview box and a 1 billion-user AI Mode.

  • Overview: a VP Googles the category, reads the box, and forwards two cited URLs. If you are not one of them, you are not in that Slack thread.
  • AI Mode: an operator stays in Search, asks follow-ups on pricing and alternatives, and gets a 4x-longer answer with more brands. This is where extra competitors appear.
  • Chatbot / Deep Research: 41% of buyers run the multi-source report. The same commercial pages have to survive all three.

Overviews is the wider net. AI Mode is the deeper evaluation. ChatGPT is still the default chatbot in every G2 segment. A dual-surface Google program that never checks ChatGPT is incomplete, which is why Austin's reporting still ties to 5,130 ChatGPT referrals and to Lumanu's 101 conversions and 566 ChatGPT clicks, not to a blended AI number.

How to measure both without collapsing them into one Google AI score

Measure AI Overviews and AI Mode as two channels: separate prompt logs, separate cited URLs, and an overlap rate you recompute. A single Google AI visibility percentage hides the 13.7% URL overlap and will tell you that you are fine when only one product cites you.

  • Prompt set. Eight to 12 buyer briefs: category shortlist, alternatives, you versus the top two, pricing, implementation. Run each on Overviews and on AI Mode. Do not rewrite the prompts every week.
  • Per-surface status. Cited with link, mentioned, absent, or misrepresented. Record the exact URL, not we were in Google.
  • Overlap. Count prompts that cite you in both, Overview-only, Mode-only, or neither. Am I Cited's 43% is a domain-level figure for the whole web. Your keyword-level overlap will usually sit closer to Ahrefs' 13.7%.
  • Retention. Re-run at 14 and 28 days. A screenshot from last Tuesday is not a KPI.
  • Money. chatgpt.com referrals, How did you hear about us, and conversions. For iSpeedToLead that is a 7.79% citation share. For Rise it is a 575% AI search expansion. For Lumanu it is 101 conversions and 566 ChatGPT clicks.

A free AI SEO audit will tell you whether crawlers can reach the pages. It will not tell you which Google surface cited you this week. The split log will.

What Austin Heaton does in a dual-surface AEO sprint

In a dual-surface sprint, Austin Heaton baselines Overviews and AI Mode on the same prompts, then ships Overview-shaped core pages and AI Mode-shaped sub-topics as two workstreams on one entity graph. He does not start a 40-post blog calendar, and he does not optimize Google AI as one channel.

  1. Reproduce the split. Run the prompt set on both surfaces. Log cited URLs. Compute overlap.
  2. Fix extractability on revenue pages. Comparison, alternatives, pricing, and proof, with a 40 to 60 word answer under each question heading.
  3. Ship the Overview extras. A core page the box can quote, a YouTube asset that names the product, and the brand in the opening capsule.
  4. Ship the AI Mode extras. Fan-out sub-topic pages, entity alignment across G2 and profiles, and one current community or review-site mention that repeats the on-site sentence.
  5. Re-test both. Fourteen days, then 28. Report Overview share, AI Mode share, overlap, referrals, and conversions.

That order is how citation share becomes a system. For iSpeedToLead, indexing and revenue-page structure came first. The brand now holds a 7.79% AI citation share, first in its set, in the iSpeedToLead AEO case study. For Rise, the same bottom-funnel bias produced a 575% AI search expansion in the Rise payroll platform case study. For Lumanu, AI-sourced traffic turned into 101 conversions and 566 ChatGPT clicks in the B2B payments platform case study. Blog volume was not the lever. Two Google surfaces, measured separately, were.

Austin Heaton is an independent SEO and AEO consultant who helps B2B, SaaS, and FinTech companies get cited in Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode without treating them as one channel. The work lives on his SEO and AEO services page. Clients work with him directly, so the person who finds the overlap gap ships the pages.

  • Dual-surface baseline. The same buyer prompts run on Overviews and AI Mode, with cited URLs and overlap recorded.
  • Overview workstream. Core pages, YouTube, and brand-inclusive capsules on top of the existing Overviews playbook.
  • AI Mode workstream. Fan-out mapping, sub-topic pages, and entity corroboration so the longer answer has a source to quote.
  • Pipeline reporting. Per-surface citation share plus chatgpt.com referrals and conversions, the same scorecard behind 5,130 ChatGPT referrals, Lumanu's 101 conversions, and Rise's 575% lift.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I'm in AI Overviews, am I in AI Mode?

No. Being cited in AI Overviews does not put you in AI Mode. Ahrefs found the same URLs in both only 13.7% of the time. If Overviews mention your brand, there is a 61% chance AI Mode includes that entity, then adds more competitors. Check both surfaces.

Which should B2B SaaS prioritize, AI Overviews or AI Mode?

Prioritize both, on one entity graph, because buyers use both. Overviews reach 2.5 billion monthly users and win the SERP scan. AI Mode has surpassed 1 billion and hosts the longer evaluation. If you must sequence the work, fix extractable revenue pages first, ship the Overview extras second, then add AI Mode sub-topics.

Does ranking #1 on Google get you into AI Mode?

No. Ranking #1 does not get you into AI Mode, and it no longer guarantees an Overview citation either. Only 38% of Overview citations now come from the top 10, down from about 76% in July 2025. Position helps retrieval. It does not reserve the slot.

How often should we re-test citations in AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Re-test a fixed prompt set every two to four weeks on both surfaces. Overview and AI Mode citations churn on a weeks-long clock, not a quarterly one. Log the cited URL, not a screenshot, and recompute overlap. A monthly deck that reports one Google AI number will hide the surface you already lost.

What is query fan-out?

Query fan-out is Google's process of splitting one search into multiple related sub-searches while the AI answer is generated. Both AI Overviews and AI Mode use it. The pages that appear on those sub-query SERPs get cited even when they do not rank for the original term, which is why 62% of Overview citations now sit outside the top 10 and why AI Mode needs sub-topic pages, not only a head-term URL.
