How to Get Cited in Google Gemini in 2026

Gemini Apps cite from Google's index and Knowledge Graph. Ranking, entity clarity, Google-Extended, and extractable pages — not AI Overviews.

Getting cited in Google Gemini in 2026 is not the same job as winning an AI Overview. Gemini Apps ground on Google's Search index and Knowledge Graph at prompt time. Ranking feeds the retrieval pool. Entity clarity decides whether Gemini names you. Google-Extended decides Gemini Apps training and grounding eligibility. Extractable pages decide whether a retrieved URL becomes a citation.

This is a sequel. The Overviews playbook covers the SERP box. Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews covers the Search split. This post is the third product: Gemini Apps / chat. Collapsing those three into "Google AI" is how teams log an Overview win and still lose the Gemini shortlist.

G2's 2026 AI Search Insight Report (1,076 B2B decision-makers, March 2026) found 51% of software buyers start with an AI chatbot more often than Google, and 71% use a chatbot somewhere in the process. ChatGPT dominates discovery (73%). Gemini nearly doubles from discovery (14%) to consideration (22%) and holds at 23% at decision. Austin Heaton runs this as AEO: get named on those prompts, then measure gemini.google.com. Scorecard: Rise's 575% AI search expansion, iSpeedToLead's 7.79% citation share, 5,130 ChatGPT referrals, and Lumanu's 101 conversions and 566 ChatGPT clicks.

How Gemini chooses sources vs ChatGPT and Perplexity

Gemini Apps retrieve from Google's Search index and then ground the answer, with Knowledge Graph helping the model name a brand instead of a generic category. ChatGPT searches when it decides to. Perplexity uses its own index. Ranking helps Gemini more than ChatGPT. It still does not reserve a citation.

In Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search, Google describes grounding: ranking systems retrieve pages from the Search index, then the model reviews those pages and shows clickable links. Gemini Apps are not a Search feature, but they share that index.

Ahrefs (15,000 long-tail prompts, August 2025) found only 12% of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot citations match Google's top 10. Perplexity was the outlier at 28.6%. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot sat around 8%. Even Google's assistants are not closely aligned with Google's SERPs.

Gemini Apps vs AI Overviews vs AI Mode (three Google surfaces)

Gemini Apps, AI Overviews, and AI Mode are three products. Overviews and AI Mode are Search features. Gemini Apps is a chat assistant that can ground on the Search index. They do not share a citation list, a robots control, or a measurement report.

Google's AI features and your website page covers the Search pair. Both may use query fan-out. Both require the page to be indexed and snippet-eligible. Googlebot is the robots.txt control for Search. Preview controls are nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, or noindex. The same page then says: "To limit AI training and grounding in some of Google's other systems, read more about Google-Extended." Search AI features are Googlebot. Gemini Apps training and grounding are Google-Extended.

Ahrefs' March 2, 2026 update is an Overviews number, not a Gemini Apps number. In 863,000 keyword SERPs, 37.9% of Overview-cited URLs also appeared in the first 10 result blocks, down from about 76% in July 2025. Run the same buyer prompts in Gemini Apps, Overviews, and AI Mode, and log three columns.

What Google-Extended actually controls (only what Google's docs say)

Google-Extended is a standalone robots.txt product token for Gemini Apps and Vertex AI, not a second Googlebot. It does not impact inclusion in Google Search and is not used as a ranking signal. Secondary blogs that collapse this into "block AI, keep Search" are writing past the primary source.

From Google's common crawlers page: Google-Extended "is a standalone product token that web publishers can use to manage whether content Google crawls from their sites may be used for training future generations of Gemini models that power Gemini Apps and Vertex AI API for Gemini and for grounding (providing content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time to improve factuality and relevancy) in Gemini Apps and Grounding with Google Search on Vertex AI. Google-Extended does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search."

Google lists grounding in Gemini Apps in the same sentence as training. Google does not say whether blocking Google-Extended changes AI Overviews or AI Mode. Do not fill that gap. Search Central named the Search control: Googlebot, plus snippet/noindex preview controls.

User-agent: Google-Extended
Allow: /

A Disallow is a publisher choice about Gemini Apps and Vertex AI, not a CDN default. See Are AI Crawlers Blocked From Your Website?. Keep Googlebot open if you want Search. Decide Google-Extended on purpose if you want Gemini Apps grounding. Google-Extended has no separate HTTP user-agent; checking logs for that name will miss the traffic.

If Google-Extended is Disallow on a product site you want Gemini to cite, that is usually an inherited robots line, not a strategy. Book a 30-minute call and we will read the live file against Google's crawler docs.

Entity and Knowledge Graph signals that make Gemini name you

Gemini names a brand when Google's systems can resolve it as an entity, not when a homepage slogan is loud. Same name, same category, same proof on-site and off-site. This is the naming step on top of the index, not another authority-building listicle.

If the site says "mid-market AP automation," G2 says "enterprise finance suite," and LinkedIn says freelancer tool, Gemini hedges. That mismatch is the gap entity authority AEO is built to close.

  • Named in the answer. Product and company strings appear in Gemini Apps prose, not only as an unnamed URL.
  • Cited with a URL. A supporting link points at a page you control, or a corroborating page that repeats the same sentence.
  • Same category sentence off-site. Align the category sentence before you publish more pages.

G2 found 85% of buyers think more highly of a vendor an AI chatbot cites, and 45% say a review-site citation is the most confidence-inspiring signal. The G2 sentence has to match the on-site capsule. That layer is how G2 reviews become ChatGPT citations, applied to a Google assistant.

How to write a page Gemini can extract

Write one question per H2, put a 40–60 word answer under it, then prove the claim with a statistic, a quote, or a table in crawlable HTML. Gemini extracts passages from the index. The GEO paper (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) found citations, quotations, and statistics lifted visibility up to 40% on GEO-bench.

Google's guide still applies: unique, non-commodity content, important facts in textual form, headings humans can follow. You do not need llms.txt, special AI markup, or chunking. Build each commercial section as a question H2, a 40–60 word capsule a model can quote alone, and evidence in HTML. Ship revenue pages first: comparison, alternatives, pricing, implementation, proof. If the only commercial facts sit in a PDF or a JavaScript widget, the index may have the URL and still have nothing to ground against.

How to test Gemini citations and measure the traffic

Run a fixed set of buyer prompts in Gemini Apps, log the cited URL, and re-run two weeks later. One screenshot of an Overview is not a Gemini test. Cited-with-link, mentioned, absent, and misrepresented are different statuses. Measure gemini.google.com separately from Search Console's generative-AI reports.

Use 8 to 12 briefs. G2 found 33% of initial software-research prompts are category-based and 31% are competitor-based. Only 6% start with budget. Cover category, alternatives, you vs the top two, pricing, implementation, and who it is not for. Log date, surface, exact prompt, status (cited with link / mentioned / absent / misrepresented), cited URL, whether the product was named, and the 14-day re-run. Search Console generative-AI reports cover Search and Discover, not Gemini Apps. Segment gemini.google.com the same way how to measure ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic in GA4 segments chatgpt.com. A free AI SEO audit checks whether robots.txt blocks Google-Extended. It will not run your Gemini Apps prompts.

What Austin Heaton does in a Gemini citation sprint

He baselines Gemini Apps against Overviews and AI Mode, unblocks Google-Extended on purpose, ships extractable revenue pages, aligns the entity sentence, then re-tests in two weeks. He does not start a 40-post blog calendar. The person who finds the missing source ships the page.

  1. Reproduce the split. Run 8–12 prompts in Gemini Apps, Overviews, and AI Mode.
  2. Fix access. Googlebot stays open for Search. Google-Extended is Allow if you want Gemini Apps grounding. See the crawlers post.
  3. Fix the page the query needed. Comparison, alternatives, pricing, or product page with a 40–60 word capsule and a table.
  4. Align the entity. One category sentence on the site, G2, LinkedIn, and Crunchbase.
  5. Refresh, do not duplicate. Edit the live URL. Same slug.
  6. Re-test at 14 days. Then look at gemini.google.com in GA4.

iSpeedToLead holds a 7.79% AI citation share. Rise produced a 575% AI search expansion. Lumanu turned AI-sourced traffic into 101 conversions and 566 ChatGPT clicks. Extractable commercial pages plus a Google surface that can use them were the lever, not blog volume. Indexing and revenue pages came first; a thought-leadership calendar did not.

If you want that sprint on your category prompts, not a slide about "Google AI visibility," book a 30-minute call with Austin Heaton.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ranking #1 get you into Gemini?

No. Ranking #1 does not reserve a Gemini Apps citation. Ahrefs' 15,000-prompt study found ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot citations overlap Google's top 10 only about 8% of the time. Position helps retrieval. Extractable pages and entity clarity decide the citation.

Should we block Google-Extended?

Not if you want Gemini Apps to ground on your public pages. Google's crawlers documentation says Google-Extended manages training and grounding for Gemini Apps and Vertex AI. It does not impact Search inclusion or ranking. For a B2B product site, Allow is the usual default.

Is Gemini the same as AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews and AI Mode are Google Search features, controlled with Googlebot. Gemini Apps is a separate assistant. Google points publishers to Google-Extended for training and grounding in some of Google's other systems. Winning an Overview does not put you in Gemini Apps.

How is this different from Perplexity?

Perplexity uses its own index (PerplexityBot) and always shows numbered sources. Gemini Apps ground on Google's Search index and Knowledge Graph, with Google-Extended as the eligibility token. Ahrefs found Perplexity's citations overlap Google's top 10 at 28.6%, versus about 8% for Gemini.

How often should we re-test Gemini citations?

Re-test a fixed prompt set every two to four weeks in Gemini Apps, and keep Overviews and AI Mode on separate columns. Grounding is prompt-time retrieval, so a second run can change the source list.
