Search Console Generative AI reports show AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions. What they miss, how to read them, and how Austin Heaton turns them into an AEO sprint.

Tracking AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search Console is now a first-party job. On June 3, 2026, Google launched dedicated Search Generative AI performance reports that show impressions when your URLs appear inside AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover. Impressions only. No queries. No clicks in that dedicated view. Pair it with classic Web performance data and GA4, or you will misread the funnel.
This is the Google Search half of an AEO measurement stack. It does not cover ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini Apps. Those need separate referral and prompt logs. Austin Heaton runs the Google surface here, then layers ChatGPT and Perplexity traffic in GA4 and a fixed prompt set for the rest.
G2's 2026 AI Search Insight Report found 51% of software buyers start with an AI chatbot more often than Google, and Google's own Search surfaces still matter for B2B discovery. Scorecard context: Rise's 575% AI search expansion, iSpeedToLead's 7.79% citation share, and Lumanu's 101 conversions and 566 ChatGPT clicks.
The Generative AI performance reports are dedicated Search Console views for impressions inside Google Search generative AI features. Google's announcement names AI Overviews and AI Mode for Search, plus generative AI features in Discover, with separate Search and Discover reports. The help center frames impressions as how often links to your site were shown to a user in those features (Source: Google Search Central Blog; Search Console Help).
Google also said the same generative AI visibility stays inside the overall Performance report under the Web search type. The dedicated report is a scoped lens, not a second ranking system (Source: AI features and your website).
At launch, the dedicated Generative AI reports emphasize impressions. They do not replace a query report for AI Overviews, and they do not tell you whether a buyer clicked, booked a demo, or even scrolled. Google has said it is still collecting feedback on which additional metrics would help. Treat impressions as a visibility KPI, not a pipeline KPI.
Google has also noted that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews tend to be higher quality, with users more likely to spend more time on site. That claim is about click quality when someone does click, not about the impression-only AI report filling your attribution model (Source: Google Search Central).

Open Search Console for the verified property, go to the Generative AI performance report for Search (and the Discover twin if you care about Discover), then read impressions by page, country, device, and date. Export CSV for anything you need outside the UI. Google rolled the reports out to a subset of sites first, so if you do not see them yet, keep checking after a full-site verify.
Keep the classic Web Performance report open in a second tab. AI feature impressions are part of overall Search visibility. The dedicated report answers "how often were we linked inside generative AI?" The classic report answers "what happened to Search traffic overall?"
These are different products. Collapsing them into "Google AI" is how teams celebrate an Overview impression and still lose the Gemini shortlist.
Ahrefs found ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot citations overlap Google's top 10 only about 8% of the time on long-tail prompts, while Perplexity sat near 28.6%. Ranking helps retrieval. It does not reserve a citation. For the Search-surface split, see Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews.
Search Console also ships a Search generative AI control under Settings. Include is the default. Exclude blocks your links and content from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover generative AI features. Google says the control is not a ranking signal for the rest of Search, does not replace noindex, and does not replace Google-Extended for model training limits.
For a B2B product site that wants citations, leave Include on. Exclude is a publisher choice for a narrow set of cases, not a CDN default. Inheritance from parent properties matters: a URL-prefix property can inherit a domain-level Exclude unless you override it. Check Settings before you blame a content gap.
If a child property is inheriting Exclude from a parent you do not control, that is a settings problem, not a content problem. Book a 30-minute call and we will read the control tree against the live robots file.
He treats the Generative AI report as an inventory of Google-cited URLs, then ships extractable revenue pages for the gaps, re-checks eligibility, and measures referrals separately. He does not start a 40-post calendar because impressions ticked up.
Eligibility for Overviews and AI Mode is still indexed and snippet-eligible. There is no special AI schema unlock (Source: Google Search Central). Schema that matches visible text helps parse. It does not buy the impression.
Search Console generative AI reports are one column. A complete stack for Austin Heaton's clients looks like this:
Platform properties in Search Console track Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube on Google Search. That is a different scoreboard. See Google Search Console platform properties if social Search is in scope. For the metric system Austin uses across engines, start with how to measure AEO results.
Austin Heaton is an independent SEO and AEO consultant. On his services page the measurement work sits next to technical audits and extractable revenue pages: wire Generative AI reports into a weekly scorecard, confirm the Search generative AI control, unblock crawlers, and ship the missing comparison or pricing page the inventory implies. The dedicated Generative AI performance reports launched around impressions for AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover generative features. Clicks from Search still live in the classic Web Performance view and in Analytics. Use both. Do not expect the AI-only report to be a full funnel.
No. Search Console generative AI reports cover Google Search and Discover generative features only. Track ChatGPT and Perplexity with GA4 referral segments and a prompt log, as in this GA4 guide.
Usually no for a B2B product site that wants citations. Exclude removes your links and grounding from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Discover generative AI. Google says it is not a ranking signal for the rest of Search. Leave Include on unless you have a deliberate legal or brand reason.
No. Gemini Apps is a separate assistant. Search Console generative AI reports cover Search and Discover features. For Gemini Apps, manage Google-Extended and run Apps prompts separately.
Google's documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements and no special AI schema. Helpful, people-first content in crawlable text still does the work.
